We had another fraught bus journey  along the lake side to Copacabana, a lovely town on the edge of the Bolivian part of Lake Titicaca. From here we planned to travel by boat to the Isla del Sol (Island of the sun) which is supposed to be the birthplace of the Incan civilisation.

The island was stunning and we walked the entire length from North to South stopping to wander around some Incan ruins including the Sacred Stone where the Incan legend began. We also managed to have a skinny dip in the very refreshing (9 degrees) waters of Lake Titicaca just before a tour boat came around the corner and might have got more than they bargained for if they had been a couple of minutes earlier.

We had quite an exciting boat ride back as the wind whipped up as soon as left the island and the lake became really choppy. We had to come down from the roof because the boat was becoming unstable and waves were breaking onto the roof. There were a few people looking rather sick and scared, particularly as there seemed to be no sign of any lifejackets. The captain had to abandon the wheel at one point to go and rescue a rope that had been knocked into the water by a wave and was interferring with the propeller. Supposedly we were one of only 2 boats that made it all the way back. The others diverted to another town and people had to get on a bus back to Copacabana. All very exciting.

As it was Nics last night we decided to blow the budget and stay in a really posh hotel on the hillside overlooking the lake….all of $20! I think I’m going to like Bolivia.  It was a beautiful place with a gorgeous garden with hammocks and a hot tub. We bought a  bottle of red and spent a couple of hours relaxing in the hot tub watching the sunset over the lake. Wow.

Our travels together will be coming to an end tomorrow which will be very sad and I will be back to travelling on my own again….no-one to watch my bag when I go to the loo!! Hehehe.

Next stop La Paz………
