Today is my last day in the States. It has already become something of a fiasco just trying to get out of the country. Over the past weekend, it was unclear whether I would even be able to leave. Visas, it turns out, are not something to be left until the last minute.
The visa I needed for the Philippines, my first stop along the way, was supposed to be stamped in my passport and returned to me one week ago. Through circumstances that may or may not have been my fault, it was only returned to me yesterday...Monday, the 26th of February...28 hours before my flight. I like to think that I'm blameless, if only to keep from feeling that my trip will be plagued with self-inflicted snafus and an undertone of nervousness. So, for the record, the U.S. Postal Service isn't quite as reliable as their motto might have us believe.
Aside from this, the trip is coming off splendidly so far. After receiving my passport in one piece, my spirits lifted quite a bit. I made good time to Louisville, my port of embarkation; picked up a great new camera for capturing indescribable moments and sharing them here with you all; and most importantly, the edgyness has given way to a kind of calm before the storm - I'm ready to take it all in and with any luck I'll come back with tons of good stories and souvenirs.
Feel free to keep me posted on all the things going on with you - I'll be checking my email (hopefully) each week or so - which means I'll be trying to get a new entry in here at about the same timeframe.
