We are in Blenheim, Marlborough Wine region. We did our bike tour yesterday and what a great day we had.
We set off at 10:30 on our bikes and got back to base at 17:30, 9 wineries, 1 lunch and 25km later.
The wine trail is flat as a pancake and the wineries are as close as pearls on a string, so we did a fair bit of cycling but at a relaxing pace and with a tasting as our reward at every 10 min. stop.
Did we get pissed, you may ask?! Well, slightly lightheaded but not so much so we could not find our way home... ;-}
We tasted some great Sauvignon Blanc, of course, this being the place where some of the best in the world is produced but also surprisingly got our noses stuck into Pinot Gris, Gewurtstraminer, Riesling and some great Pinot Noir. All really tasty and young (2008) but more often than not tasted as if it had been mellowed for at least 5 years. They are so very lucky here that they can just pop open a bottle from the year before and it will taste fantastic.
We met some great people along the way and had long chats about wine, our travels, tastings and regional history.
We have done 3 wine areas so far, Barossa in South Australia, Hawkes Bay NZ and now Marlborough and I feel that Marlborough definately came up trumphs with great landscape, yummy wines and lovely people. Top of the pops!
So, now we are waiting for our bus to Nelson, our last stop in NZ before we head off to Samoa on Wednesday. We are actually looking forward to relaxing on a beach after our action packed visit to NZ.
We believe we deserve it ;-}
