Had a walking tour of Durnstein....one of Austria's smallest towns (less than 1000 people). Was a real cute town with lots of little shops through narrow cobbled streets. Was on a hill and shops wound around to the top. We looked inside the courtyard of one house and it was really cute. There was a gorgeous church, an old castle at top in ruins and a new castle, now a hotel, at the bottom. First place of many to come that you needed to pay to go to toilet!

We got back to ship for lunch and then I joined a bicycle ride from Durnstein to Melk while Fred relaxed in lounge and boat sailed to Melk...no way back for bikers! The bike ride was 32 km and we went through lots of little villages. We saw a church with beautifully kept graves out front...about 40....apparently you rent these for 10 years and bury your family in these ...all family in one lot....at end of ten years you either rent again or put bones in big grave of everyone's bones! We stopped for a beer /wine half way through...lovely bike ride but very hilly.

We beat the ship to Melk....was windy and cold waiting for ship. At Melk we all were taken for a tour of the Melk abbey where our bike tour guide went to school....most of the massive abbey is now a private school for kids 8 to 12 years old. The abbey was very impressive from the outside but pretty boring inside so Fred and I abandoned the tour and walked back to boat through the gorgeous town...again cobbled stones and lots of little shops.

Prior to dinner we were entertained by the La Strada classic trio...two violinists and a guitar player....very young and very good!
