Triberg was cute the minute we pulled into the small town.  Cuckoo clock stores were everywhere and the "i" was super easy to find!  So, we parked and Layton and Jana went to find a place to stay.  We left the parents at the shopping.  Before we walked out of the store, Jim & Willa Jana AND Judy had bought clocks and were shipping them home!  WJ and Jim had to carry the weights for the clock they bought!!!  Crazy!

The town was sort of dead at night, but we were able to find a place to serve us our usual schnitzel and wurst and yes....desserts!

The next morning we visited the World's largest cuckoo clock and even got to go inside the working parts which was pretty cool.  We also went to the town hall to see some wood carvings that were pretty random.  (We learned that town hall is rathaus in German.) Then, we drove up to the wasserfall (waterfall) which is Germany 's largest waterfall.  We treated ourselves with lunch and the traditional Black Forrest cake at Schafer Cafe who has been making it from a recipe that was created in 1905! It was none of our FAVORITES but it was really yummy layton hanging out in the room

Layton , Judy and Jana got a lesson on "real" cuckcoo clocks.  We found out that traditional cuckcoo clocks have a specific bird.  Who knew?!

JUDY'S ADDITIONS

I'm actually writing this from home where I will have time to correct errors!!! Brother! I just read back over the other emails...Time was always so short...I wanted to tell you that I asked Jim what kind of cattle we saw as we traveled the Romantic Road...he said the majority were Simental (sp) 70%, and then Brown Swiss 22%, Ayrshires 3%and Holstein 5%. He and Layton had a good laugh about the percentages because Jim took a nap here and there as we traveled down the highway...

We went to see the world's largest cuckoo clock in Triburg...pretty fascinating! The workings of it were huge...it was interesting to see the bellows open up at the time that it struck on the hour to make the cuckoo sound...there was a museum there also which had an old piano, a little shadow box with a VW in it...and other things that were so typically German.

Then we went to Germany's largest waterfall ("wasserfall" in German)...it was beautiful...just made you so aware of the power of the Lord and how He wants to release that power of the Holy Spirit in us...living water! Layton did some hiking...L/J have thoroughly enjoyed all the hiking they've done on this trip...They've enjoyed little "off the beaten path" places...and we did, too! They have a book that is put out by "Lonely Planet" for every country they have visited...the places to eat are listed, places to stay, there are city maps, etc pretty big cuckoo clock

. It's a tremendous guide book...and they have perfected their skills at scouting out and finding places.

We came back into Triburg and went to the court house (rathaus in German...I remember Dominec our guide telling us in 2001 that we could always remember what the court house was in German!)...it had an old furnace, old telephone...etc. It had a watering trough for horses out in front of it. We looked at more cuckoo clocks...one guy told us showed us what a real cuckoo bird looks like...

We found Schafer's Cafe that is the best place to get Black Forest Cake...we enjoyed it though it's not my favorite dessert. At that cafe we saw mustard in a tube like toothpaste...neat! The grandkids asked me why didn't I bring some home with me!
