We had rain with us for most of the drive to Salzburg ....and we found out that it was going to be rainy for a few days. BOOO! Don't worry, we were still excited about the SOUND of MUSIC tour. We were able to get rooms and tour tickets without too much issue. Since it was Sunday, we knew not much would be open for dinner so we just went to the restaurant attached to the hotel. It was a Pakistani/Italian restaurant, a bit random, but pretty good.
The next morning, we joined the Sound of Music bus tour. It was about four and half hours of Sound of Music trivia. WJ was in heaven! We figured that WJ has seen the SOM about 70 times in her life. For those of you that don't know, "Climb every mountain" was WJ and Jim's high school class song. SOM also plays once a year...and WJ finds time to watch it at least once a year. Jim enjoys it too..just maybe not quite as much as WJ. We learned about the film facts as well as the actual von Trapp family. Yes, they play songs as you drive along....the McManigal's did not miss too many words that is for sure! The bus tour also takes you into the beautiful countryside, not just around Salzburg
After the tour, we lucked into a place to eat in the Alstadt (old town). We all wanted something "light", but just like Germany , Austria does not know what "light or small" mean. We decided to try doing a bit of a walking tour....sometimes the rain was really coming down, but the group did very well. We warmed up inside the DOM (cathedral) which turned out to be WJ's and Jim's favorite church of the trip. As Jim said, "you know the Holy Spirit is in this place." Then, we went to the St. Peter's church and cemetery where the real and movie von Trapp family hid from the Nationalist Party. This cemetery was cool...we even found a tomb for someone named "Willa" (Jana's grandma's name).
Finally, we were headed back, but Jana really wanted to go to a random Easter egg store. So, she and WJ headed back out in the rain while Layton , Judy and Jim decided to warm up at a coffee shop. Now back to the egg store, this place was nuts. They had hundreds of thousands of eggs painted. Yes, real eggs hollowed out with hand painted designs. They had anything and everything possible. Easter colors, Christmas colors and scenes, Salzburg eggs, Halloween eggs, sport eggs....you get the picture
RANDOM
Did you know the HQ of Red bull is in a small village outside of Salzburg , Austria ? We did not either! We passed by it on our SOM tour. Funny the things you learn...
Layton and Jana were going to dye their hair red before the parents came...but we chickened out. However, Jana did end up putting the dye in her hair that night in Salzburg . It was sort of maroon colored...Jim was disappointed with the outcome. He wanted it to be patchy and obvious...instead, Jana had to be in direct sunlight to see the change.
JUDY'S ADDITIONS
We enjoyed the sound of music tour so much! Music was great...we sang on the bus...tour guide had such a rich German brogue. On the way to the places we saw fat sheep, deer, fat cattle and a swan came swimming up to the group as we were on the shore of a lake...beautiful!
It was 8 degrees celcius so it was cold and was also rainy...I had the right amount of layers...too much one time on the bus but that was the only problem. We saw a wonderful church that had such a reverent feel in Salzburg. Jim said the Holy Spirit is here and that was so true!
(next morning same location)
We are onour way to Eagles Nest this morning...Hitler got this for his 50th birthday present...Leland and I were there in 2001...such a historical place...gives you mixed emotions. Then, we will drive to a castle that looks like Disneyland...then on to the black forest.
We have been fortunate on accommodations tho the last 2 nites were more expensive than our deal in Rothenburg. L,J and I have a triple, WJ and J have a double and rooms have been very close to each other.
The z is where the y normally is on this kezboard!!! Gotta go for breakfast,.l..I found some wonderful chocolate zesterrdaz morning...time is getting short on this computer...we tried different foods again and shared...after a cold wet daz I had some delicious broccoli soup last night...L had a potato dish which was different and reallz good...the other three had pizza which was very TASTY TOO:::i HIT CAPS LOCK AND DO NOT WANT TO TAKE THE TIME TO FIND THE KEZ TO TURN THEM OFF:::

L keeping up with currrent events
. We all wondered how the countryside could be so different from Germany . Germany is beautiful too, but Austria is in a league of its own. Even with the cold and rainy weather, it was just amazing...can't imagine what it would look like with sun! After the tour, we lucked into a place to eat in the Alstadt (old town). Thanks for the wonderful trip and to relive the Sound of Music. There were many beautiful sights to see in Salzburg other than the Sound of Music. I am glad that we made the effort to go to Austria and see the beautiful country. I will have memories that will last for a lifetime. The trip to find the Easter Egg Store in the rain was fun and to see ALL the colored eggs.

Salzburg
I LOVE Salzburg! I can't believe that it has been 16 years since I have been there! I sang in that DOM! Did you get a pretzel and eat it by that fountain of Neptune? How about a Mozart chocolate? I am so glad you had a great time with your family. Tell them I said 'hi!'
a dream come true
That was so cool to see all the pictures and hear all those interesting things about the sound of music. I didn't even know they had a bus that gave tours. So cool!! Stay safe and take care... MOnica the soccergrl
