We were only in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria since 1879, for a night. Sofia is named after Saint Sofia, meaning wisdom in one language or another! : < ) Sofia had other names but has been around since Roman times and you see remains just laying around the city.

We feasted on HUGE slices of pizza for about a dollar for lunch at a park. Of course, we then wandered around the city to see a few sites:

Changing of the guards at the President's Building happens every hour so we ran by there on our way to other sites.

Alexander Nevski Memorial Church - A Memorial given to Alexander Nevski, a Swiss-born Russia who fought against the Ottomans changing of the guards

. No expense was spared as the domes are covered with gold (yes, real gold). A new layer was just gilded as a gift from Russia sometime in 2000s.

St. Sofia church was definitely not the prettiest church we have seen but it was built in the 5th century which is really cool and inspired the final name of the city.

Ladies Market - we roamed around to see what the locals had in season. HUGE tomatoes and lots of peaches could be found for super cheap. Also, cheap clothes and other random goods are found at the open air market.

Sofia City Garden - This was a nice park with a small fountain. We viewed a photo exhibit and had a beer to end the journey. While we were at the park, a random man started "sketching" Jana. Layton picked up on him watching our table and then saw that it was Jana. We all left our table and walked away. The man followed us for a few blocks before coming up to Jana and asking her if she wanted to purchase his art! Should Jana be considered beautiful or gullible? : < )

After our wander around the city, we went to see The Dark Knight (new Batman movie) at a new shopping mall in Sofia sorry guys just a little late

. SO GOOD! Go see it!

RANDOM

We saw a Mercedes convertible cop car. Supposedly, the cops use confiscated cars to make a very slick police fleet!

We stayed at Maya Hotel which was a flash of the Communist times. Look at the pics. Our room was hysterical! You felt like you were in a communist movie with the decorations and furnishings. The bathroom was like a patio in the room built out of plexiglass and a sliding door. Awesome. Oh, the staff fit the part too! If you ever come here, would not suggest you to stay here!
