Now, this is a much bigger city, about 300k+, than we just came from and very quaint. We did a few tourist things and then went to the movies! Our first stop was VERY important...a Fish n' Chips joint where we had great fried fish n' chips for the hefty price of $4! Wow...we have not eaten that cheap in a LONG time. Funny thing was, they served it on butcher paper AND sold a bottle of ketchup for $4 too. We quickly decided our meal tasted just fine without the ketchup. We were off to the Cathedral Square where of course there is a beautiful church. The square also has lots of street performers too. One is pretty famous, the wizard (you will see a pic). He has a funny banter about life and the world, when we saw him he wa talking about women, shopping, and backpacking affecting the war? Anyway, he was pretty funny still. Supposedly, we were lucky to have caught him performing. The last toursity thing we did was visit the Arts Center which is an old university complex that now houses local retail shops
Finally, we ended up at the movie theater. They have weird pricing structures. Since it was Tuesday, we only paid $9.50 but if we had been there on Monday or Wednesday, we would have paid $13.00. We were quite pleased with our luck! We say the George Clooney movie Michael Clayton. We liked it pretty well.
Our day ended with dinner at an Indian restaurant that was wonderful. We were joined by the bus driver, Stu, and another Irish girl who was making her way home after being gone over a year. We then went to a bar called Saints and Sinners at the Base hostel. They played the game Rock, Paper, Scissors as a tournament...what a fun and random idea. Jana might be bringing this one back with her!
$4 dollar lunch
. All of the shops were very unique and each was original artwork (photography, art, jewelry, wood carvings, etc). Our favorite was a wood shop where they had all kinds of boxes, clocks, bowls and who knows what else....it was cool to look at. Finally, we ended up at the movie theater. Rock, Paper, Siccors.
There is a recent movie about a tournament like that. It was at the Cambridge Film Festival and I believe it was a movie made in NZ. Also a funny movie from Kiwi land is Eagle Vs. Shark.
