Yesterday, my good friend Hector Hernandez called me. He is an immigrant from Columbia, S.A. We have been friends for years.
Hector had read the article in one of the newspapers. He wanted to know what was going on. He knows me so well he was sure the information was in error, but he wanted to get it from the source, me. Hector plans to see what he can do to help clear this up. He has even thought of calling Eduardo Piolin Sotelo in person!
Later, I heard about other people who were asking about the matter. they have seen it in the newspaper. My reputation has clearly been damaged. I am not sure how I am going to repair it, the unfair slam towards me is all over the spanish speaking press. I am not a happy camper.
I spoke to Roberto yesterday and he has had an attitude change. He told me before he did not think I was a minute man, and now he is more patient with me on the telephone. He wants still more information about my role in the immigrant community. This is very demeaning. Would a Latino have to face the same scrutiny?
I do not think rational immigration reform is going to come only because our Latino brothers want it to. This is now a human rights matter, how do we treat people who find themselves within our borders. We need the support of all the oppressed people, our African American brothers, our African brothers (different form African born in the U.S. brothers) our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters, the coalitions for mentally ill, and all people who stand for liberty and justice for all, not just those who have "papers".
