I spoke to Roberto on the Pioilin team this morning. In a rushed conversation, much of which I did not understand, he encouraged me to travel to Washington. I needed to wear a suit and bring credentials, letters from clients, my license and so forth.
Unfortunately, attorney's don't get a license, we get a bar card, and that was not good enough the first go around. Asking for letters of reference from my clients is a sticky issue. My suit is hopelessly wrinkled but I could figure that problem out.
I asked a lot of my friends for advice. In the end I decided not to go. Sad to say, I too am suffering from the climate of distrust caused by the hate filled rhetoric we hear every day.
If I understood the conversation with Roberto, and I am not sure I did, the Caravan has had several death threats. They are in genuine fear. They don't know who to trust. I can't say I blame them. Even if the opposition has good points to make in the debate, what happened to free speech? Shutting down free speech, from my point of view, is more of a threat to national security-and the principles of our founding fathers-than any simple border crossing by someone whose goal is to bring food to the table for the family.
