Sept 30th 2012

is a religious term for a place in which existence is positive, harmonious and

The Gili Islands are all of the above and are among the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The positive atmosphere emanates from the locals offering their warm smiles and the contentment from the rest of us experiencing heaven on earth.  The concept of time had been lost in another world.

The first day of arrival was on the 20th of September. I was picked up from my hotel and driven one hour to the pier in East Bali, here is where we departed on a ferry boat to reach Gili Trawangan. Trawangan is the largest island among the three Islands. When we stepped off the boat, the water was crystal clear with turquoise and green colours paralleling each other. The backdrop of the island consisted of mountains, volcanoes and other distant paradisiacal islands.

I spent ten days on the island Trawangan and during my stays visited Gili Air, Gili Meno and Lombok. The majority of my time was spent relaxing and absorbing all the pleasures Trawangan had to offer. I had dived all three islands, the first dive was Gili air. The dive lasted 45minutes and the maximum depth was 18meteres. The visibility was amazing!  We saw many different kinds of tropical fish, lots of false clown fish and trigger fish. The more interesting creatures were the white eye moray, stingrays, and sea turtles. The colours created a very surreal environment.

The second dive was a night dive off the coral wall of Gili Meno. I had never been on a night dive before and was quite excited. The method of light we used was a flashlight and the visibility was very limited. Some of the dive techniques were slightly different, although easy to task. The dive lasted 50min at 18meteres. We saw turtles sleeping in the coral wall, lots of tropical fish, eels and all sorts of sea urchins. During the ascent the dive master told us to turn off our flashlights so that we could experience the bioluminescent organisms surrounding us. This was really a remarkable underwater experience.

The third dive was a fun dive and took place just off the north point of Trawangan. All three dives were a great experience and I can't wait to return and complete my advanced diver certification in December.
