I spent 8 hours on the bus yesterday then 7 hours waiting at the train station. The staff were really grumpy and I had to pay them a bribe to get a train seat. I got a sleeper cabin with an almost concrete bed which smelt of urine. I shared it with Chinese Barry who I met at the station. He liked the rock hard beds/planks as apparently that's how people like to sleep in China, on very hard surfaces. An interesting piece of trivia.
A man outright asked me if I would marry him so he could get a English visa. He was extremely intense and creepy. Not surprisingly I declined his romantic request and he started shouting "I am a human!!! A human!"then later (walking up the beach) I noticed he was following me and he did this for about 1-2 miles
On this note it is worth noting the cultural difference between British men and Sri Lankans. This is quite generalised as I'm sure there are Sri Lankan men who are as cool as ice and British men who are desperately persistent.
When dating a girl the British man may act pretty cool. Maybe he will act uninterested, maybe not text the girl for a few days. Treat them mean and keep them keen treatment.
However the Sri Lankan man may immediately suggest some kind of commitment such as a serious relationship from the first meet, he may text and call the girl continuously, he may lay in wait outside her hotel.
Whilst this is a much more transparent, flattering approach it can also be quite alarming coming from Europe. One experience was getting a Sri Lankan sim card and receiving a phone call off someone accidentally calling the incorrect number. In Britain? No problem!
"Oh dear, this isn't Martha? I'm terribly sorry. How embarrassing! Most sorry about that."
In Sri Lanka this resulted in the man calling me back over 30 times, asking me various questions about my whereabouts etc etc.
Unfortunately the outcome was not a romance but me desperately blocking his number and pushing a chair against the door, waking at every small noise in abject terror throughout the night
And now over to religion...
It seems most people in this part of Sri Lanka are Catholics as there are lots of Jesus shrines with models of Jesus with an agonised face being crucified which is off putting when your trying to enjoy your tea.
I went for another avyedic massage (definatly just a normal massage with avyedic in front to make it seem as though it has medicinal properties). Both times I have had to strip fully naked in front of the masseuse (women) while they watched and just lie there naked. No protecting your dignity and privacy with a towel like in England. Also the women slapped me during the massage ? Part of the massage ? Abuse.
