I learned that 1cm on a country map does not equate to a short distance in real life. My general equation was 1 map cm =1 hour. A 4 hour bus journey proved this to be wrong. I heard there was a religious festival on in a town in the south so I decided to go and see what the 411 was. There was no train directly there so as 1cm=1hour I got the bus.
The bus.
Is filled to about 6x it's capacity to what feels like the population of Sri Lanka inside one bus.
The roads are quite dangerous I always feel I'm a blink away from being involved in a RTA.
The bus driver put on a Tamil version of gangnam style to cheer everyone up ("wap wap wap its SRI LANKAN style wap wap wap"). Its better than the other Sri Lankan favourite that goes (in a insipid voice) "sri lanka very nice...sri lanka paradise...very nice"
There was a man with a very productive cough sitting next to me.

The festival was abit pap to be honest I think all the processions were on at night so I missed them going during the day. I thought it would be really mind blowing and thought provoking but although there was some older people praying around the temples (or some sleeping I suspect) it was just thousands of people buying and selling loads of plastic tat like whistles and angry bird masks. I suppose it's like Christmas we should be in the church praying but everyone goes to Argos instead.

I have also been to the rainforest. I went about 50m inside where some leeches started attaching themselves to my feet. I starting screaming and crashing about my guide had to individually pick them off my feet whilst I was nearly sick.
I would be no good as ray mears or bear grylls stealthily sneaking through the forest quiet as the wind being at one with the insects. They move really fast for a creature that looks like a slug and when you pull them off your skin bleeds. I had the impression that they only drank "bad blood" like when they are used for medicinal purposes...hopefully I don't have a disease I don't know about.

Also I visited Arugam bay which is a surf resort on the coast. It's full of middle class hippies who like to surf and palm read all day which isn't really my thing but it is beautiful and hot.
I went on safari and the guide just parked up in the middle of a national park and everyone just got out and wandered off alone where there was elephants, leopards, poisonous snakes and crocodiles. Then his jeep got stuck in a swamp and we had to get out and push it.

I've been staying in some pretty disgusting accommodation prior to coming here one with some kind of lice/fleas crawling on me in the bed then today I found what looked like some kind of sri Lankan super nits around my head and on my skin so I'm think I have got fleas. I'll have to closely monitor the situation! I don't know what is have to do. maybe ill have to get those powders you put on dogs and put it over me.

2 days later:
Lice update: I had dog fleas. I didn't think they liked humans but there you go. I didn't need to go to vets and get any special powder just picked them off. Earlier the day I had rescued a (3rd) dog and was carrying it later to find it was riddled with fleas so I think that was the source.
I went for an ayvedic massage and the women was like hulk hogan I thought she was taking the muscle from my bone when she was massaging me. it was like she was scrubbing some potatoes or rolling me flat like a chapatti.
I've left arugam bay now and am heading back to Colombo. Currently just waiting for 5 hours at a deserted train station with angry staff hoping that there will be seats on the train. I've booked my outward trip to laos in 3 days. I don't really know much about it so I better get reading my 10 year old lonely planet! I'm sure it will be better than my 1988 travel guide to Sri Lanka advising that "trouble seems to be brewing in the north"
