We took another 'dawnie' today to see the Ghats from the river, it was truly beautiful
. Funny though becuase the people who have stalls at the side of the road actually row out and grab hold of your boat!
'Look my shop, buy something, beautiful bracelet, cheap price, buy something sir, change money, want grass hasiss charas, good looking something, rickshaw have hotel, which country coming from, only looking, first customer special price discount, bhang, cheap silk, sarees?'
'Nice hair sir want beard trim, massage good head neck shoulders which country?'
You get the picture... Or moreover you will get the pictures when they are posted. Onward to Kolkata!
We are now in Varanasi, which I must say is without doubt the most impressive city I have ever been to. If you want to see the circle of life, come to this town. Small children play cricket on the Ghats next to the burning bodies of those who wish to be relieved from the cycle of Moksha (life and death). People wash in the river whilst human skulls and dead cows float by and small beautiful birds peck at the flotsam of animal remains. Apparently the ash and fat from the bodies makes the river soapy, perfect for your whites! Unfortunately it is rife with bacteria and if a softy western-type fell in they'd need a year of injections and medications. The city is insane but entirely beautiful in its chaos and energy. The city may be famous for its touts, but not even they could detract from the majesty and beauty of this, the oldest of cities.
