Sorry for the long entry- Haven't found time to write with all the excitment! Been in Laos for the last ten days- here's how it went!....
Spent 2 days on a wooden bench crusin down the Mekong River from Thailand to Laos....it was a long and exhausting trip but the scenery was beautiful and the people on board were great- packed in a container like sardines with no where to go but in the crocodile infested waters can really bring people together.... we stopped in this one town along the journey to spend the night and it was the sketchiest place I have ever been- luckily I was with a group of Brits, Dutch, Aussies and Americans- a guy from San Francisco actually , that I have seen many times before around SF- I have been with this whole crew of people ever since - anywhere from 10-20 people at all times- its enjoyable to have a big crew but also can slow things down a bit.....So we landed in Luang Phrabang- an absolutley wonderful old French Colony with villas and french bakeries!!! The town is adorable- the people are so freindly and not as pushy and in your face as other SE Asian countries....there are lovely temples that have recently been reconstructed and the freindliest monks ever!
I spent one day there pampering myself with a massage ($3.00), a haircut from a "ladyboy" with fake purple finger nails ($2.00)--and a pedicure ($1.00)!! The guest house I stayed in cost $2.50 a night and I ate at an all you can eat vegetarian buffet for 3 nights at a whopping $0.50 a night! And it was actually really tasty!! Beers were about $1.50 and they are buy one get one free before 10PM- and everything here closes by midnight so the monks can rest! (they wake at 4 am everyday for prayer) Lao has certainly been cheap but I can not stop shopping so its adding up--great Holiday presents for everyone when I get home!! I went hiking to the most beautiful waterfall EVER! There were unbelieable turquoise colored pools throughout the river as the water pulsated from the 200 foot falls above..... we climbed to the highest point and leaned over the cliffs to have a view- MAGNIFICENT! I couldn't even take pics from above because they would never do it justice.....
