where's my surf board???
Entry 17 of 83 | show all | print this entry |
Okay-so made it to Thailand- safe and sound- lots of hostels were booked but worked it out and found a good spot, one I am happy with, its clean and safe- and the yuppier part of town--- there is a certain place here that is known for being a backpacker haven- meaning cheap- but sometimes a little extra can go a long way (especially here)- and you know how I like to roll in a little bit of style!!So upon my arrival I was willing to bet any money that it Thursday- however, in fact it clearly was Friday and the U.S. Embassy would be closed on Saturday (an errand on my list of things I needed to do)- therefore there was no reason for me to stay in the city for the weekend... so the next morning - Saturday morning- I caught a bus to a ferry to a pick up truck taxi to a hippy hide away including a beachfront bunglow--- literally waves came 3 feet away from my door to the bungalow ---- in most places in the world that would cost a hefty penny to stay ...my acommodation expanse that night, $3.oo! It was quite lovely I must say...arrived, went swimming and wished more than anything at that moment in time I had a SURF BOARD!!! the waves were great- a little big for my surfing level of expertise- but it sure would have been fun- instead we body surfed- which was also quite fun! A beautiful sunset and deep intellectual conversations invovling us saving the world carried us into the night- there was a kiwi (new zealander), 2 english blokes, an american cyclist and a young, yet wise chilean guy - and me....had a wonderful thai dinner a few beers and then started dancing to reggae tunes on the beach(which ofcourse later turned to Michael Jackson)- the place was set up somewhat like a disco except the dance floor was the beach edge- during the day the "Treehouse" was a spiritual retreat where people would read books and exchange philosophies- swing in hammocks while drinking fresh tropical fruit shakes, but at night everyone seemed to put on their night shades a shake a love.... It was fun while it lasted but at the crack of dawn a long grumble from my insides started a battle that would last for the next 2 days- not again!! YUP- laid out! ill as can be- the funny thing with these illnesses is its all or nothing- where usually I am down for the count!- once again I was DOWN! Luckily this time I was laid up in a hammock overlooking the Bay of Thailand and sipping on fresh exotic fruity shakes - could be worse- (except the extreme pain- that was pretty bad) All the guys from the night before were a little concerned considering we were dancing and feeling fine the night before (clearly this was not a hangover!)so they offered to help me get back to Bangkok or to a Dr. on the island.....I figured I'd sweat it out and see how I felt the next day...again I slept in my penthouse suite with a priceless view and the harmonious sounds of the ocean gliding below my feet to ease my mind...but still was illin'. In the a.m I mustered up the strength to get my stuff, forced a piece of white dry toast down my throat and worked my way to the taxi- ferry - bus- taxi- hostel (about a 10 hours trip all together) Got back on the cipro (parasite killer drug) and advil- which I did not have with me since I was only headed out for 3 days.....slept in the A/C dorm room and still sweated it out......slowly recovering!!!
(my bunglow on the beach that I retreated to for the day!)
Beside all the crazy bodily malfunctions I am experiencing the trip has been great- there are so many things that occur in a day it would be impossible to write about them all- especially everything I see and the thoughts that are constantly running through my head- its unbeleiveable how much that inner voice speaks to you when you are traveling alone.... but I'll spare you all the nonsense since thats where the personal journal comes in handy- this is just a fun way to keep ya'll informed of whats happening on the day to day....hope you're enjoying the read!
