Jungle trekking and an unexpected proposition...
Entry 16 of 37 | show all | print this entry |
I'm afraid I'm playing catch up on my blog so i'm a little behind but I should be able to catch up now!
First the good news - my old camear has recovered! After two weeks of leaving it under the fan it appears to have dried out and it works! Yay! So the only annoyance is that I wasted 100 GBP on a now dead new camera, could be worse, at least I have a working camera still. Ipod is till a bit dodgy, battery only lasts about 4 hours but its not too bad.
So, yesterday was fun :o) I went with Jen and Alex (two of the people who I did the lake trip with) on a jungle trek. We decided on a 7km trek that was said to take 3 hours each way. The first 3km was really easy, a wide dirt road that we sauntered along at a fair pace and took about 50mins. This is easy we thought, 3 hours must be an overestimate. So we walked another 500m to a swimming place by the river and had a splash around. it was really nice, and the water was cold! yay! There was quite a currrent so we swam up the inside of the bend, and then jumped into the current and floated back downstream :o)
After 30mins we carried on walking. (wearing trousers over wet bikini isnt a great look!) It got gradually harder as we went on, as the hills got steeper and more frequent, and the sun got hotter so we were pretty glad when we saw the marker for 1km to go. So we pushed on, adn the last 1km was killer! Who needs a gym when you have a jungle?! Lots of big steps up and down tree roots, climbing and scrambling, and really really steep slopes. by the time we made it to the waterfall at the end of the trail we were exhausted! But it was beautiful, a really pretty spot with the waterfall dropping around 6m into a big pool where we swam.
The walk back nearly killed me, it was reallt hot by this point, adn having already done 2 days in the jungle none of us were on top form! the humidity makes walking really hard too. But we made it! We had another splash in the river on the way back too which was refreshing. we walked around 16km in total and I was wrecked by the time we got back but it was fun :o)
So we went for a very early dinner, and had a great desert - sticky rice in coconut milk with fruit, yummy! And then headed to the internet cafe where i wrote the last blog entry. The headed back to the hostel around 9pm for a very early night! Or so I thought...
I'd been back in my room about 15mins when i heard someone shouting my name from outside. So I opened the door adn found our guide Kian outside. He seemed to want to chat so we sat down on the veranda. I was exhausted, adn although he was really sweet just wanted to go to bed, but my increasingly obvious hints of yawning, and "im really tired, think its time for me to go to sleep" didnt seem to have much effect! So we chatted for about 2 hours, and he told me lots of things about the jungle, and thailand, adn showed me some cool photos of monkeys. Anyway, by 11pm I decided that it really was bedtime, so stood up adn said I was going to bed adn starting moving inside. i said how good it was to meet him, and shook his hand and still he wasnt going! So then he walks into my room adn sits down on the bed (can you see where this is going?!), adn im still trying to get him to leave. then he says "can i stay?" to which i said no very firmly! He was a lovely guy and quite cute but i'm not about to invite somone iv only know 2 days to stay the night! So he eventually walked back outside and then stood there. I was feeling quite awkward by this point! And then he turned and looked at me, and looked very miserable, and said "i like you but you no like me?" It was so sweet adn i felt so mean, but trying to explain to someone whose english vocabulary is predominantly jungle based that althoguh he was very sweet he still couldnt stay was quite hard! He looked very upset, adn said "I am very ugly" so then i had to tell him that he wasnt ugly, adn it wasnt just him, no man was going to stay in my room, but he still looked very miserable. Anyway, so this was all quite awkward, as I still really wanted to sleep, and he was just sitting on the steps to my room not going anywhere. I wasn't scared of him or anything, i just felt bad for making him miserable adn it was getting a little creepy. So eventually I had to close the door on him, as 10 mins later he still hadnt moved. I got ready for bed and put on my ipod as half an hour later he was still outside adn i think he was trying to talk to me but i really didnt want to get into another conversation so just turned my ipod up loud and went to sleep with it on.
So that was totally unexpected!
Apart from that I slept very well adn feel very refreshed :o) I'm now in Surat Thani, a town on the east coast adn tonight I get the night train to Kanchanaburi, where the bridge ove rthe River Kwai is. Should be fun ;o) Then im heading north for elephant trekking and rafting :oD
So hope you are all well and not too wet!
Lots of love xxx
