The Beach, and England-on-sea
Entry 12 of 37 | show all | print this entry |
Hello from Thailand! (Haha, im sounding like im presenting eurovision now :oP)
I've made it to Ko Phi Phi and its... busy! The main village on the island, where I am staying is a warren of streets, containing shops, restaurants, dive shops, bars... There are so many europeans here, its really weird after Malaysia! And whats really crazy is that because there are so many europeans here its actually much harder to meet people. Everywhere else I have been travellers have clumped together but here they are not in the minority any more and everyone already has their groups, its much more lads/girls boozy holidays than backpackers (as far as I can tell). Oh well, im going diving tomorrow so I wont be bored :o)
I'm staying in (I think) the only dorm on the island, 100baht a night (less than 1.50 GBP) which is really good for here as its an expensive island. Have splashed out today though, bought a Magnum (60baht) and had my first cocktail, in fact first alcohol in asia! Banana daquiri from an irish pub (180baht). Its so weird that my drink cost nearly double my bed for the night!
Anyway not much to say about this place, its nice enough but too touristy for me, I want to see real thailand not a package holiday resort. The beach here is pretty but the sea is really realy shallow, i waded for ages and was still only knee deep :o(
one thing ive reallt noticed about thailand is that compared to malaysia, the amount and quality of english spoken has dropped dramatically. In Malaysia virtually everyone speaks some english and if they work in restaurants/taxis/hotels they're pretty good. Here its much more difficult, and i think il have to rely on sign language more because my thai is going nowhere fast! Also seeing the amount of alcohol here is weird as Malaysia is so conservative - Thailand is predominantly Buddhist whereas Malaysia is muslim, and it really shows.
So, that is my view of the world for today! Generally feeling pretty upbeat, went to dinner with a japanese girl, very sweet but definite language barrier! Tried to play pool but she didnt really have a clue. Oh well!
Hope you're all well ;o) lots of love xxxx
