A suprise stop in Krabi
Entry 11 of 37 | show all | print this entry |
Welcome to Thailand! So I've dragged myself away from Malaysia, which I have to say was tough as its sucha cool country, and iv headed north to Thailand! I'm currently in a little town called Krabi which is on the west coast, and although i wasn't planning on staying here I like it!
So today started REALLY early - I got my wake up call at 4.50am and got on a bus at 5.15, yuk. The plan was that I would take minivans all the way up and across the border, up to Krabi and then get the boat to Ko Phi Phi. Unfortunately it didnt quite work as there appeared to be some confusion regarding pick up points, so we were waiting for some people for 30 mins in Penang, who turned out to be waiting round the corner. Duh! Anyways, so this meant that by the time we got to the nearest town past the border, Hat Yai, I had missed the bus I was supposed to connect on to. Grrr. So I ended up sitting around for 3 hours. I did a bit of shopping and read a book so wasn't too bad but annoying that the getting up early was for nothing, as there was now no way I could get to Krabi before the last boat to Ko Phi Phi left.
I eventually left Hat Yai, and after another 5 hours on a minibus eventually made it to Krabi. I got chatting to an american guy on the bus who has been living in Thailand for the last 2 years (teaching english in Bangkok) so when we arrived at the bus station I got a lift in to town with his friend (a belgian who lives here), and he found us a really nice guesthouse :o) Its 200 baht a night which is expensive compared to the 80 baht I was paying last night, but I have my own room (not a dorm!) and its clean with nice bathrooms :o) I thought I'd treat myself. And as 200 baht is about 3.50 GBP its hardly breaking the bank! So after checking in I went for dinner with these guys, we went to a danish restaurant and it was soo nice to have some good western food! I had fillet steak with bernaise sauce and chips plus drink and salad to start - 280 baht (again expensive for here, but total bargain!)
After dinner I left the guys to it, I got the impression that theye were going to have a few drinks, a few joints and then a "massage" so thought it was time I was heading off! They were nice guys, its just as the belgian said, after 10 years in thailand you dont have any morals left!
So next exciting news, after dinner I went to a big department store on the mainstreet and bought a new camera! I've pretty much given up on mine, it may recover but it was a bit dodgy before, and as I'm going to "the most beautiful islands in the world" I need a working camera! So I spent around 100GBP, no idea if thats a good deal for what I have but it seems pretty good and im gonna use it plenty. I've given up on the phone, that got the wettest and doesnt look like drying out, but not going to bother replacing it... doesnt seem worth the money as i cant really use it out here, and once i get to Cambodia i cant use it full stop. So I will be without phone for the next 7 weeks, eep! I havent been that long without a mobile phone since I was 14!
The town here isnt much of a tourist place, but the main street is really buzzing, lots of shops and life. Just had a walk around and its a fun place to spend the evening, but i wouldnt want to stay long. No worries tho, I'm heading to Ko Phi Phi on the first boat tomorrow.
Oh and i just had the most amazing ice cream sundae! 3 different ice creams (cookies and cream, various chocolates) plus choc brownies, chocolate coated bananas, truffle and fudge sauce. Yum! And only 59baht (less than 1GBP) I love this place!
Ooh and on the subject of food I just have to mention dinner yesterday - sushi! Double yum! We went to a food court (loads of restaurants around a central seating area). I really wanted something that wasnt fried noodles so I splashed out and had 6 california rolls, 6 salmon rolls and 2 prawn nigiri - 2.50 GBP! Mum - you wouldnt understand but belive me that is good value!
Think iv run out of things to say, although considering iv done nothing today iv managed to write an awful lot!
I promise to upload photos soon, iv rescued those from my old camera onto CD so no excuses now! Then you can all be properly jealous :oP
Miss you and love you :o) xxx
