I spent this weekend in Tehannaout, a small village in the mountains about 45 minutes outside Marrakech. It's a relatively short distance, but it might as well be another world from bustling Marra. Instead of busy squares full of hawkers, you have clear mountain air and amazing views out over the palm-filled valley. The town itself is rather dilapidated, with many buildings crumbling or in half-finished states of repair. I stayed with a friend who's a native of this town, whose house from the outside looks like a ruin but on the inside is beautifully repainted and repaired, with an open salon and a coutryard in which a fledgling orange tree grows. It is a calm and wonderfully restful place, where the only real pastimes are sleeping, eating, sitting with a book on the terrace, or walking around the valley. The perfect place to spend a weekend, away from city life. Travelpod's maps can't find Tehannaout. And that's exactly the way it should be.
