We tried to journey to the left island of Bar Harbor first thing this morning, but the road was closed and we had to turn around. Plan B! After stopping at McD's for a Diet Coke (big surprise!) we started our travels down Highway 1. This was such a great road...and the views were fantastic. We crossed an amazing bridge. It was high...and narrow! It was an architectural and engineering feat!
I was amazed at the number of businesses that were located in homes along the highway
After Camden, we headed south and drove through Bath and a couple of smaller towns. We saw the shipyards of Bath from a distance, but tours were not available. We found a small town...very small...that had a great restaurant! We ate on the balcony outside...overlooking the river AND the railroad tracks! LOL The view was semi-good...but the food was fantastic! I asked what the specialty was and our waitress said they make their own bread. Sold! I ordered a grilled cheese with tomato and it was absolutely without a doubt the best grilled cheese I'd ever had
We arrived in Freeport around 4:30pm. My comfort level was not high because we didn't have a reservation for tonight. It really wasn't a problem as far as vacancies...but prices, of course, was pretty high. After all, we are in LL Bean country! Speaking of which...we did go to the LL Bean store and look around. We also visited a few of the other stores in the downtown area and will go back in the morning and spend a little more time. Oh...the hotel? Cabins...down the road. There are so many cabins available in Maine! Next time I'd like to find one on a lake.
It's time to relax a bit and I'll look forward to updating you on our ventures tomorrow. We're headed towards Portland...with a stop at Kennybunkport. I think I have Jim convinced to take a boat trip on the ocean!
