Sunday, August 16, 2009 - Ottawa

What a beautiful city! We visited Ottawa upon the recommendation of my boss, Mark.  He is Canadian, and he and his family just visited Ottawa and Quebec City.  Hence our travel schedule!  We arrived in Ottawa on Sunday about 10:15am and our Hotel was very accommodating, allowing us to check in early.  We unloaded the car and took the short 10 minute walk to the downtown area.  It was hot!   (About 95 degrees and the hottest day of the summer.)  That didn't deter us from walking about 4 miles throughout the entire day in a fairly concentrated area.

The city is very clean and safe and pedestrians are everywhere!  Of course, in the world of downtowns, these are two key factors for the success of a downtown and its future/continued growth.  We saw all of the government buildings, which were constructed with a limestone fašade.  (I think…I’ll have to verify that with my fašade experts at my office!)  The architecture was amazing on these buildings.  Located along the north side of the downtown area was the Rideau Canal, running between Kingston (Lake Ontario) and Ottawa.  We learned that Kingston was the first capital of Canada; because of the risk of attack from the water, the capital was changed to Ottawa, located inland.  I was amazed at the landscaping in Ottawa.  Flowers were abundant.  Of course, this included the many Pubs…most located by our hotel.  How convenient!  Tomorrow morning we leave for Quebec City and I hope I’m as impressed with its beauty and history!
