The drive up to Pai reminded me why I have motion sickness medicine with me and that it doesn't do me any good if I don't actually take it before I get on the bus. My stomach didn't hold out too well during the minibus ride on the very winding road. I thought I was going to make it, but about 20 km before we reached Pai, I ended up asking the driver to pull over and using the plastic bag I had been holding in my hands for the last hour. Not exactly a high point of my trip.
Once we reached Pai it took me a few hours before I was feeling like myself again. And by then, it was time for bed. Since I hadn't been in the mood to research treks upon arrival in Pai, I decided to spend a day hanging out in town and organizing a trek for the next day. Pai is a really small town that's a bit of a backpacker colony. Most of the restaurants serve western food (in addition to Thai food) and there are even a couple of bakeries.
When I woke up the morning I was supposed to leave for my trek, my stomach was not feeling good at all. I decided to go ahead and get ready for the trek and hope that I would feel better as we started going. While I was getting ready, Bronwyn came by to tell me that she had been up all night vomiting and canceled the trek. I thought I would be okay since I hadn't actually been sick yet, so I even went as far as getting in the songtaew and riding to the start of the trek. When I was feeling even worse then, I decided to turn around and head back. That ended up being a really good decision because my stomach didn't hold out for much longer and I spent the next two days going back and forth to the bathroom and my bed. On the second day I even thought I had a fever, so I went to the doctor in Pai and paid a full $3 to have my temperature taken and find out that I actually was at a normal 98.5 degrees F (well, they told me the temp in Celsius, but they said it was normal). The doctor told me I probably just had a virus, but if I didn't feel better in a few days to come back. Thankfully the next morning I woke up feeling much, much better. I decided not to hang around to wait until I was well enough to do another trek and instead to move on to Chiang Rai. There would be other opportunities for trekking in other cities.
