On the 5th April (Easter Monday) we went to the nearest town of Turangi and went to the visitor information to find out what we could do for the moring. We went to Lake Rotopounamu and walked a little way around it, it is a green lake sourced by an underwater spring not a river, it was quite pretty. We then drove to a village called Tokaanu to have a walk around some thermal pools. The north island is quite interesting, because it lies on top of 2 tectonic plates under the earths surface and as one is pushed down by the other it creates heat which rises to the surface. The pools were steaming and the water really hot. We then drove to Taupo for the main event of the day, a 15,000ft Skydive. It was really amazing, my tandem was a guy called Freddy and Alex's guy was called Ian. We got into the plane and went up to 15,000ft, the area in which we did our jump was so beautiful, right over the largest lake in New ZEaland
On the 6th we walked around the centre of Taupo in the morning then headed out of the town. We stopped off at Craters of the Moon, which is a geothermal area, so lots of steam rising out of the earth and craters where the heat has made the earth explode! It was cool to see and a cheap place to visit. We then went to see Huka Falls which is apparently the most natural thing photographed in NZ, its cool hundreds of thousands of gallons of water rushes over every second. We then went to Spa Park on the edge of the town to go to Hot Water Stream. This is one of our favourite things we have done in NZ, everywhere charges you to go in the hot springs, but this place is a stream which feeds into a river and the stream is boiling hot because of the area, so at the edge of the river there is a natural hot pool. We stayed there for about an hour and then headed to our DOC site.
