Where I stayed
Big River Ranch
did my first stint of driving. We made two stops on our 350km trip towards Kalbarri. We stopped in a place called Dongara
to have our sandwiches, another nice beach. It was much hotter today and uncomfortable being in the sun. After a brief rest
we set off again towards Geraldton the last city on the West coast. Here we had a nice cold drink in MacDonalds and tried
to connect to the free wifi which didn't work-not happy. Then got some food for dinner and beer.
The further out of Perth we go it becomes slightly more hill billyish
staying. There is 2 places to in Kalbarri which are relatively cheap, the YHA hostel or Big River Ranch. We decided to go for
the ranch. The accommodation is quite basic, but its cheap at $20 each per night. There are 42 horses on the ranch they are
stunning. Hopefully going to go for a ride tomorrow. We sat outside tonight talking to 2 girls who are working here for their bed and
board while travelling around, one from Canada and another from UK, both really nice and made us feel very welcome.
On our second day in Kalbarri we got up and went out to the national park to take a look at the river gorges. We went to a
look out point called z-bend because the river winds in the shape of a z. To get there was interesting, the road was unsealed
this basically means its more or less a dirt track. Our poor little car did not like it and it was very bumpy, for about
25km. The view was pretty awesome though and was well worth a look
expecting. They just don't leave you alone, so I have brought a fly net to wear over my head (very attractive), but it helps.
Alex was taking the mick out of me for wearing it then 2 minutes later a fly goes straight in his mouth and he swallows it,
I thought he was going to be sick. Lets just say Karma. After the trip into the national park, we were both so hot so headed
into town to go to the beach. We practised with our snorkels and did a bit of sunbathing. The sun is vicious here so you burn
very easierly, using lots of suncream. Then we headed back to our accommodation, because I went on one of the bush trail horse
rides for an hour. It was amazing beautiful scenery and we got to do about 5 canters, some really fast. It was cool to ride
in a different country where quite a few things were different to the riding style back at home. This evening we had yesterdays
left over of spag bol and chatted to the 2 girls working here on the ranch Becky and Alesha. Heading up to Monkey Mia tomorrow.
