Singapore...... I successfully navigated the metro this morning to get me to the hostel - it was pouring with rain and although the newspaper did well at keeping my hair dry the rest of me and my bag were pretty soggy! I have realised what luxury I have been in the for the last 6 weeks - the hostel room with 10 people in bunk beds and shared bathrooms is a shock to the system! it is clean enough though and only for 2 nights!
I wandered around Singpore city and saw a few of the sights in between the rain showers - it isn't that hot here but is pretty humid. I went to see the Merlion - it was being renovated last time I was here and you couldn't really see it so I have seen something new! Got a ticket to see the Singapore Symphony Orchestra at the Esplanade Complex - it was the only thing on and I needed something to do for the evening...... it was a good performance but I was struggling to keep my eyes open!
I went to Chinatown yesterday for the afternoon - and the heavens really did open, so I found a spot to sit and have lucnh, read the paper, have tea..... until the rain stopped. Discovered the local Chinese hang outs for dinner, i think I was the only white face in there, but went back to Little India to eat - I came out of the station and it was heaving, so many Indian men everywhere, I only saw one woman, again I was with the locals!!! the lonley planet tells me that Sunday is their day off so they all come out to meet their friends and hang around. There wasn't much going on,just people hanging around everywhere! I attempted to eat at some of the local places but they were full and if there was a seat I think I would have felt a bit uncomfortable sitting on my own with all the Indian men?! Found a bigger restaurant and ate my dinner from a banna leaf - the waiter looked at me a bit oddly when I ordered my curry and chaphati - clearly not the normal choice for a westerner......!
I am in the airport at the moment waiting for my flight to Borneo and using the free Internet - i think they should do this at all airports! No chairs though so I guess that stops people using it for too long.
