Back on the boat to get back to the coast and on the bus to cochin - we encountered a strike about the petrol prices which meant that the goverment transport was working but nothing esle so tuk tuks were in short supply! we waited ages for enough tuk tuks to deliver us to the hotel after getting off the bus in cochin - we prefered the wait to the 5k walk with our bags!! joined everyman and his dog in the local park for the afternoon as there didn't seem to be too much else going on.

In the evening we went to a kathkali dance demonstration which was different to anything else i've ever seen. for the first hour we watched the dancer put on his make up - a painstaking process of bright green, yellow and red paint! and then another guy makes his face bigger by sticking semicircles of paper to his chin and cheeks - I was convinced he was asleep and snoring while that was going on! The dancing was a bit odd, it is mime to the banging of a drum......

sightseeing of the old part of cochin today - we took the ferry across and saw jew town (literally where the jews lived), the churches and grave of vasco de garma, and the chinese fishing nets.

and another overnight train....... thought I had picked the best of the seats this time but it turns out i was sleeping next the alarm cord to stop the train..... I was convinced I would roll over and pull it by mistake.... the fine was a year in prison! luckily that didn't happen......
