Where I stayed
Los Angeles & Long Beach
Today we decided to skip the wonderful breakfast and had our own left over granola, trail mix and banana instead. Much more civilised. We also watched back to back repeat Ice Road Truckers until 10!
We planned to go to Long Beach to visit the Queen Mary as Tina had seen that advertised so we headed out there and arrived mid-day. We met up with Tripti from Mediasurface days for a lunch and catch up in a Long Beach café which was excellent. She came out to LA 8 or so years ago and is getting on well here which is good to hear.
We forgot to tell Jill to avoid freeways so we ended up on I405 which was a bit of a shock after a few sedate walking days
The Queen Mary was a good place to see, we enjoyed the trip around the old girl and took the haunted ghost trip into the boiler room which was entertaining. Most of it is turned over to hotel though. It was decommissioned in 1967 so I wonder if Uncle John ever sailed her?
After the Queen Mary we toured an old Russian diesel sub, a bit like one Roy worked on so that was interesting. So small, he must have stooped the whole time. Good trip though.
That was pretty much it today, we took back a book we got from Barnes and Noble for a refund which they did no problem then headed home. The long way round! We did get to see downtown LA instead of the freeway.
Next time we come to LA we'll probably pick Long Beach or similar to stay, much nicer than the central city.
Getting ready for the flight to Honolulu tomorrow, nice and early. Total miles in the US almost 3,800….
Safe, sound, and sorry to leave continental US.
