Day 24

Pismo Beach to Los Angeles

Pismo is a nice place, we'd stay here again. Lovely long beach for nice walks and plenty of sunshine (today at least). After last night’s good meal we had high hopes for breakfast which wasn’t too bad. Watched the oil spill news again, that is really making people annoyed here – quite rightly. Seems to be a right shambles.

Thanks to Alyse for reminding us that the Street of San Francisco cop was of course Karl Malden, which had stumped us before.

So off we set, stopping first in wal-mart as we needed some road trip replenishments. That trail mix we got in SF was no good, too full of odd things like chocolate drops and peanuts. We also bought a few cheap movies. Then back on the road for a 3-4 hours as we wanted to go via the scenic route rather than the freeway where possible which can be a bit challenging for Jill also I forgot to check petrol this morning so we had to detour a bit to get some juice.

The coast road got foggy again though not far out of Pismo so Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Ventura and Malibu were a bit hard to see. Didn’t stop the beach goers though, plenty of surfers and fog bathers along the way. We stopped a few times for pictures and walks but it was a bit fresh! We tried Doctor Radio again but unfortunately we picked a dull topic so that got canned after an hour.

We missed the Otter colony yesterday, not quite sure how, but we looked for it on the map today to see it was 50 miles behind us. Never mind. We did pass a number of 'bird rock’ points which were nice to see. Picturesque white and grey rocks with lots of sea birds. Until we wound down the window and realised that the white caps were not rock at all. Moving on quickly….

We stopped off at Denny’s for lunch as we hadn’t managed to so far, it was surprisingly pleasant. No Perkins, Red Lobster, or Ruby Tuesday though – sorry Meg!

The scenic coast road was not quite as we expected as it dove through a few towns en route but we kept the sea on our right until Santa Monica and then asked Jill for a non freeway route. Pretty easy on one road from the coast into LA. It seems LA is sprawling, 100ish miles across so ‘going to LA’ is like saying you could be anywhere north of Gatwick and south of Stansted. The one main road through Malibu (a part of the Pacific Coast Highway) for instance has house numbers up to 33,000+ and is 27 miles long. Like everything, it’s all quite spread out. We did discover we’re back on the Purple Heart trail which we started on so need to find out what that’s all about.

The hotel is pretty nice, not far off Rodeo Drive according to the map so probably miles away. We’ll see when we try a little stroll tomorrow. We’ll try the bus tour for starters and see how we go.

Tea was from Factors Famous Deli across the road. Not sure what it’s famous for but the soup was good. We finished off the evening by doing our accounts, checking the bank and updating our spreadsheets. The fun two accountants can get up to knows no bounds. And so to bed.

Oh, and welcome Jen and Bob! Glad you like the cards Amanda. Thanks for all your comments Mums xx

Safe, sound, but with sore eyes…
