Day 22

Last day in San Francisco

Up early this morning to make sure we got to our tour in time. We were a bit too early so Tina finished me off at cards. I've lost three pages in a row. Perfect.

We checked the tour and discovered we had booked another city tour as well as Alcatraz and forgotten to look so we went to the sightseeing office and the chap there kindly changed us to a Muir woods/Sausalito tour in the morning instead of the city tour which was 3 hours on the coach – not something Tina fancied.

So off we go to Muir Woods which is one of the remaining giant redwood groves in California. Where as the sequoias are thick and tall, the redwoods are much taller, over 300 feet and grow in groups called cathedrals. It’s a lovely place and smelled divine, very peaceful. We managed to get some non foggy shots of Golden Gate before Muir so I went a bit overboard and also my sorry attempt at an arty pix with a rusty chainlink. Also, some surfer dudes were out by the Golden Gate today so we snapped one of them. Quite reasonable surf it seemed but only short waves. Our guide was very knowledgeable and we learnt a lot about why eucalyptus is not wanted in the parks. Apparently they were imported as fast growing for the railroads but they picked the wrong variety. They grow quickly but give off so much oil they ruin the soil for native trees and can explode in thunderstorms causing brush fires, they split when you drive a nail in them, and the koalas don’t like the leaves. Altogether a sorry choice and now they can’t get rid.

We headed back from Muir to Sausalito which is a lovely town, quaint and on the bay with great views and high property prices. We met a friendly seagull who posed (also one later). Also some Californian sea-lions who did not pose.

Back to Pier 39 in the city and then a quick lunch before we head off to Alcatraz. Lunch was good, the Sea Princess was in port for the day with more non posing sea-lions cavorting teasingly out of camera range.

It’s a short trip to Alcatraz and a bit of a hike up the hill but very interesting. The audio cell tour was very good. Cells are very small 6’ x 9’ and 7’ high. Isolation was grim. The whole place was a bit of a taunt as you could see the city only a mile away. Not a good place to stay. They had some famous hard core cons there like Al Capone, machine Gun Kelly, and a bunch of most wanted. We met another seagull. Sea Princess was leaving as we left Alcatraz but too far away to get good pictures. She headed out past Golden Gate to the Pacific. Cruising looks like it might be fun….

Back in the city we met up with Alyse who we knew from Mediasurface days. She lives a good 3 hours drive north so it was great to see her and for her to come down. We drove around the town a bit and she showed us places we hadn’t seen before. We had a nice dinner nearby where she used to live in San Francisco back in the days. A fun evening but we forgot to get a pic of us all and just caught her on the way home. Thanks Alyse!

All set now and ready to hit US1 tomorrow and through Monterey, Carmel, Big Sur and stopping off at Pismo Beach on our new route towards LA.

Safe, sound, and windswept.

This looks like a very interesting day - you are managing to pack so much into each visit. I rather liked the rusting art :-). Great to be able to meet up with an old friend too. Sausalito sounded good. Enjoy today xxxx
