Yosemite to San Francisco
The Blackberry Inn is the best so far, first place we've thought we could probably live. The bed was good, double bath, excellent shower and the first kettle we’ve seem for proper tea! Had to be up at 8am though for a group breakfast, which turned out to be very interesting and the best breakfast so far. Excellent fresh oven baked omelette and real tea. Met two other couples from the UK, one from Darlington and one from North London. Taryn, if you’re reading this, we met a pharmacognosist! He was an old guy (graduated in ’68) but he explained they used to study pharmacognosy as a matter of course back then with all sorts of emphasis on plant sources. Funnily enough a young couple from the US who were also there were both pharmacists who found their courses were much less involved (they were also slightly embarrassed they did not know what nepthene was)
We managed to get both Meg and Vic on skype today so that was nice to see them both. Our neighbours have been mean to Meg - bullies, just 'cos we are away.
Anyway, off we go, pausing to say goodbye to the cats and dog they have at Blackberry. They were also very helpful and friendly hosts, we’d go back there for sure. Took a couple of useless photos of the tiny hummingbirds, needed a much faster shutter than my poor point and shoot can manage. The ones in the pix are about 2-3 inches only, very cute.
The drive was not set to be too long, 3 hours, although google reckoned you could add up to an hour for traffic. We stopped off en route for some local Californian cherries but otherwise Tina’s Afternoon Trolley was a bit lacking… The glove compartment had two prunes, no trail mix, no savoury special k, the jerky hit the bin
10 miles to go with San Francisco in sight and hit the traffic. 14 lanes merging into 5 at the toll plaza of the Bay Bridge then crawling along the waterfront so we detoured round the back a bit. Traffic was a bit of a shock, got honked at a few times but will get in the swing no doubt. Lucky we have parking, looks like a nightmare to find on this Memorial Weekend. Nice apartment, noisy but overlooks Alcatraz and is very well located. Nice to have some space.
We wandered Fisherman’s Wharf for a bit and found somewhere to eat. Bubba Gump Shrimp had a 4 hour wait so we went somewhere else on the pier. The camera ran out of battery as I forgot to charge it, stupid me, so we have only a few not very good pix today. We spotted a herd of Segwayers but not sure we will risk it here! A leisurely stroll back and hopefully a quiet night. City tour tomorrow and Alcatraz the next day.
Safe, sound and slightly stressed from traffic and noise…
