Finally Russia! I've been itching to come here for years and this is my first taste of hopefully many. The only down side is as usual (3 cruises, 3 times now) I started getting a bad sore throat last night. Glad I brought the drugs. Today was all about the standard touristy crap though, but thankfully we're here for 2 full days so hopefully tomorrow allows more free time. Unfortunately though, because it's Russia, the only way we're allowed off the boat is with an organized tour or with a preplanned visa. I have a visa, but it doesn't start til August 1st so I gotta play the game.

Anyway, we got damn lucky. Right off the boat, the guide tells us it's fleet week in St Petes. And it was! Hot Russians in uniform all over, military ships in the canals, artillery firing, etc. It was too much. Unfortunately we couldn't go run after it and had to see it all from a distance as we had to follow the tour which ended up at the Hermitage.

So, off we go in our tour bus. It was the entire crew, Chris, Jim, Mike, Stephen, Jeff, and myself. Nothing too exciting to bring up on the tour that was part of the agenda. Lots of nice things, pretty pictures and buildings. Lunch was a bit of a let down, tasted like something they pulled out of the freezer. Then the Hermitage was exactly what I want to avoid. There were lots of people, no AC, and little old ladies yelling in russian at you if you touch anything but the freakin floor. I'm glad I have no set plan when I get to Moscow. Jeff and Stephen bailed early due to the heat and I just finally got sick of painting after painting and sat down on the center stairs and watched the boys. Far more interesting I must say.

After the standard tourist goodness, back to the boat for a disco nap, chill with Stephen, then get ready for the night out. Atlantis had set up a party for the cruise ship in one of the biggest gay clubs in St Pete. Unfortunately, it wasn't planned too well and it was essentially the cruise ship in the club. Plus it started at 9pm which for Europe is just stupid early. There were maybe 10% were Russians. It was still pretty fun though considering. It was 4 floors and some nice bartenders. There also was a back room area with hallways with no lights really. I obviously stayed away for obvious reasons, but Stephen drug me up there for a short period of time before the bus left, just to force me to expand my comfort zone. Nothing happened, but I'll leave it at that.
