Today is the 24th and Sam and I have been in Urumqi in Xinjiang province since last night.

On the 22nd, we spent a second day in Dunhuang.  In the morning, we went to breakfast at one of the three or four Western cafes in town.  This one was called Charlie Johng's Cafe and it's owned by the same family who owns both Charlie Johng hostels.  Charlie himself runs the two hostels and his wife runs the cafe.  They have what can probably be called a small dynasty in the tiny city of Dunhuang.

Since we ate breakfast late, we planned to skip lunch and go for a bike ride in the afternoon when the city cooled off.  Our hostel advertised bikes for rent, as did the three or four Western cafes.  However, Charlie told us that all venues had recently stopped renting out bikes because there wasn't enough demand for them.  I asked Charlie what else we could do in an afternoon and he told us that since we'd already done the caves and the dunes, and since we didn't have time for an excursion outside the city, there wasn't anything we could do.

So, we read for a couple of hours then walked to a nearby cafe for coffee.  After that, we rested then went to dinner at the same night market outside our hostel that we'd gone to the night before.  We can read enough Chinese characters to select a varied meal of meat, vegetables, and noodles or rice.

At about 8:30, when the sun was setting, we took a taxi to the plush Dunhuang Silk Road Hotel, where we had drinks on the roof and looked out at the dunes as the sun set.
