The Haiti group is one of the most fun-loving, passionate, and dedicated group of volunteers you could meet. Our meetings could probably be shortened by an hour each time but suffice it to say we all love to talk! (We have some volunteers who have never set foot in Haiti, but still offer their assistance. How cool is that!) Each of us plays a role in trip-planning.
As we prepare for our upcoming trip, my role has been to collect dresses and suits for the people of St. Pierre. The people of the area are dedicated Catholics and the sacraments mean so much to them (Baptism, First Communion, Marriage, etc.). Unfortunately, being so impoverished, they are unable to purchase outfits for these occassions. Although, they can sew, the materials are not available for them to construct a First Communion dress or suit. Through these donations the church is able to set up a "rental program"
In the past month I have collected:
4 men's suits
3 boy's suits
10 girl dress-up dresses
4 wedding dresses
20 women's special occasion dresses
20 First Communion dresses
What a wonderful way to provide dignity to these special people! Thank you to everyone who donated! When I brought these donations two years ago Father Boniface had tears in his eyes! I feel I must give a special shout out to one donor (I'll call her Saint Christina) who, for the 2nd time, went into JC Penny's and purchased many dress-up dresses and First Communion dresses for the trip. The generousity of people warms my heart!
