Terezin, about an hour north of Prague, was a military fortress during the Hapsburg years; however, because of its natural fortifications, Heydrich and Hitler turned it into a Jewish Ghetto, then a concentration camp. Our day-long visit was somber but informative. After visiting a musuem which had powerful exhibits, including children's artwork from the ghetto, we saw the empty streets of a deserted ghost town as well as the actual concentration camp that was later built there within the old fortifications.
