We landed at Ariquipa's airport, overlooking a volcano, and stayed at Hotel Nunez for the night, but first we toured around the city.  Like most major cities it has it's Plaza de Armas, with a church and arched doorways, antique shops selling fake antiques (you can't take out antiques out of Peru anyway) and a famous monastery which we went to visit.

The Santa Catalina de Siena Monastery is a city within a city.  We got an English speaking guide, one of the girls who are studying in the monastery, who spoke very good English and was very informative (she was very surprised to find out that we had no clue about the canonization).  We went all over the monastery, including the nuns' private rooms.  The place is very serene, and the architecture is fantastic.

The next day we went on a 12 hour bus drive to Nazca.  The bus rides in Peru are an adventure by themselves, from some reasons the people hate fresh air, and prefer the horrific smell of an aerosol can being emptied into the closed container, chocking the passengers.  G-d forbid you'd try and open a window, you'll get treated as if you don't like to eat rats-on-a-stick.

The monastery is certainly worth a visit.
