We took the bus from Santiago to Mendoza, I highly recommend that route for several reasons, once is the price, second is the beautiful route, and third is the border check.
Border check...?
Yes, the border between Chile and Argentina is on top of the Andes, not only do you get an awesome view, but even to get out stretch your legs, and donate to the boarder guards pension (the assistant bus driver comes around collecting money, especially dollars, to bribe the border guards to let the bus through).
At Mendoza we stayed with Alon's family through Passover. They were very hospitable and pleasant. They were kind enough not only to provide food and shelter, but also to take us around town, to the beautiful parks, zoo, restaurants, wineries, and throw an asado for us.
There is a lot to do in Mendoza, if you want to go skiing, hiking, biking, or simply like us, chill out and try to dwindle the red meat supply of Argentina (we were unsuccessful).
Overall:
Great people
Great food
Great wine
Great beer
Beautiful girls
