Back to Puerto Montt.
I used to enjoy very much staying at places where travelers meet, you get to exchange stories, find out what's worth seeing (especially if you are traveling in the opposite direction), and make new friends.
The overnight hostels (Bed and Breakfasts type of places) are great for this type of entertainment, the whole trip would have had a whole different feel if we would have stayed at hotel to hotel. We stayed at a place called "Casa de Anna", a very popular B&B which belongs to Anna and her son. Anna is a very nice lady, which many travelers owe their welfare to, I've heard stories of people who stayed their for weeks while she nursed them back to health. Even though they used to have a very annoying little dog, who kept barking at night, and I had to go out and throw stones at his doghouse to keep the little bastard quite.
The port is also beautiful; we spent several days just walking around town, enjoying the empanadas, fresh seafood and beer.
Overall: Great people Good beer Good food Nice girls
