We stopped at Calafate to view the Perito Moreno glacier, which is absolutely stunning. We witnessed falling ice (made global warming a bit more realistic), blocks of several sizes, and heard the huge crushes they made falling in the lake.
This was my first memorable experience with crisp air and clean waters.
My only regret is not going on the glacier itself.
We stayed for several days in a youth hostel, even though we were many people in one room, it is a most memorable experience. We were meeting people from all over the world, talking, chatting, and sharing experiences, all had an interesting story. A man from Israel traveling with his daughter, an English or American couple that helped me make macaroni and cheese, and an English guy we met later in Torres del Paine.
Overall:
If you're in the area (and even if you're not) this is a must.
