At La Paz we decided to splurge and spend an whole extra US$1 a night staying at a nice hotel (meaning clean rooms and no cockroaches) called "Hotel La Joya". We got breakfast (so there goes the $1 savings all you cheap folks who were staying a block away), a great view, and reasonable accommodations....well worth it.
We traveled in and around La Paz for almost a week, browsing the markets, helping the locals party, and eating well at a local restaurant which served local, as well as Middle Eastern delicacies and favorites.
There are lots of peddlers, and lots of markets, sometimes it seemed that in La Paz no one actually has a job and money simply exchanges between merchants, and between tourists and merchants. One of the more unique markets is what we called the "witch markets" even though I'm not sure that's the official name. The market is full of women offering all kinds of potions and weird charms, for example un-born lamas for good luck.
We also went to Valley de Luna, which is supposed to have a lunar landscape, I've never been on the moon so I can't really tell, but it is weird, unique and beautiful at the same time. We walked around a bit and took some pictures; the valley is within driving distance from La Paz.
We also went to a local pub, hung out, and joined the locals in a street fiesta which was happening at the time. La Paz is a nice place to hang out for a week or so, but it's not "the best of", food, beer, girls etc. are not as good / nice as in other places, and since the tourists stand out you are simply seen as walking ATMs.
