Our tax money at work - The Bad
Entry 5 of 23 | show all | print this entry |
We are now in the midst of trying to move, we bought a new house, sold our condo and really hoping that the transaction would go smooth. So far it hasn't. Our old town of Linden, NJ has decided to penalize us for their egregious slip-up, as is the way of all governments. In order to sell the house we need to obtain a "Certificate of Occupancy" (COO) from the town. Sounds easy, right? After all we kept the condo in great shape, however one of the previous owners have installed a central air unit, but neglected to get a permit for the town. Now, before our sale, they decided they need a permit. Mind you the condo has been bought and sold at least three times since. Our tax money at work.
We did call the town to complain, they did agree with us that it is completely unfair but necessary and we are simply going to get screwed. This means that we have to pay: - The town inspector - A licensed plumber - A licensed electrician
All out of pocket! All for a piece of paper! Our tax money at work.
This is on top of all the other expenses that comes with selling a house, moving and being "nickel and dimed" to death by every Tom, Dick and Harry that has his or hers hand in the pot. (For example: someone screwed up and didn't get the papers to the lawyer on time, so we called to "remind them". We got charged $30 for next day air service... because they made a mistake?).
Our sale has been pushed back because of this whole fiasco and other bureaucratic non-sense, for example some town worker that needed to sign our COO was on vacation for a week...what will they do if that person drops dead. Close the town?.
Don't forget we have two kids, and we're living out of boxes which make everything more difficult then it should actually be. Our daughter is acting strange, which we don't blame her, but she refuses to sleep in her room and won't let us out of her sight. Suddenly it donned on us, she thinks we're going to leave her - the mind of a two and a half year old. It all makes sense now, the baby sleeps with us, and we didn't pack her room and favorite toys, we're surprised it took us this long to figure it out. She calmed down once we took her to the new house and she saw her room.
