As Christmas time approaches, we were invited to take the kids and judge a gingerbread competition at The Friends of The Frelinghuysen Arboretum.

OK, "invited" might be a strong word but we thought the kids would have a good time looking at the gingerbread houses as well and might develop a critical eye.

Please, who are we kidding?

After a week of everyone being sick all we wanted was to get out of the house.

We promptly arrived at 15:00 (the show closes at 17:00) and waited about 45 minutes to get in. Once inside we saw rows of tables all filled with gingerbread creations. Castles, houses, bars, animals everyday objects and even a house or two – all made from gingerbread.

We walked around noticing the creations we wanted to vote for only that by the time we finished our rounds the kids were a bit cranky (even though they had a blast) and the voting booths were closed.

Oh well.

We headed to a nearby pizza place and home to bed.
