Stony Point Battlefield And Lighthouse

We were going to go to the NJ Hot Air Balloon festival, but since the weatherman called for sporadic showers, and it was disgustingly humid out we canceled those plans. Our decision was also helped by the advice of a friend that dragging two kids around in the festival won't be fun. Instead we decided to go the Crayola Factory, but it was too nice of a day out so we decided to keep that option for a nastier day and scoured the Internet for other interesting places to go to.
We discovered that there is a lighthouse in an old battle field in New York called Stony Point. As it turns out Stony Point was a very strategic and logistically important British Fort which looked over and protected King's Ferry, "a vital transportation and communications link between New York and the New England states".
The American rebels, let by Brigadier General Anthony Wayne attacked the fort at midnight on July 15-16, 1779 and thus ending major British activity in the north.
The directions we got off the Internet mapping sites were pretty crude and led us to the center of the town of Stony Point, NY. But combine those directions with the directions from their site and you'll get there without any problems.
Getting close to the area it started to rain, but we decided wait out the rain by feeding our baby and having our own snacks. When we got to the Stony Point Battlefield we had to pay $5 parking / entrance fee. You drive through a wonderful stone gate, through a narrow bridge and follow the signs to the parking lot. Then you have to walk up a hill (short walk, steep hill) to the actual battlefield. The area is clean, with a sample camp, tents, cannons, and demonstrations of firearms. There are trails to go and signs to tell you about the people who fought there and the artillery placements. There are wonderful views of the Hudson from almost any high artillery point, everything is scenic and lush.
The grounds also have a great museum with artifacts from the battlefield, as well as history of the lighthouse. Our last stop was at the restored lighthouse, it is small compare to other lighthouses we've been too, but the restoration job is impressive and gorgeous panoramic views are worth it all.
Afterwards we went to eat a the Fire Side (84 N Liberty Dr, Stony Point, NY), which even though is a tablecloth restaurant is very family oriented, with great service and excellent food.
