Colonia del Sacramento is my new favourite place. Itīs beautiful, sunny, happy, safe, and clean. The people all seem to be in good spirits, and there is no one hassling you. This little town is bordered by the rio de la plata...which is the colour of cafe con leche, or in english: coffee with milk. There are sandy beaches, palm trees, cafes and restaurants, cobblestone streets, local buses that ride with the doors open - and no money boxes, the bus driver, or a designated worker on the bus takes your money and gives you change and a ticket. The exchange rate is amazing, so that our money goes a long way--right now we are camping for 3 days for the equivalent of $7.50 CAD each in total for all days. Colonia del sacramento would be a perfect place for a writer or artist to clear their mind...or for us to relax and enjoy the amazing atmosphere.
The ferry here was very nice, clean, and comfortable. Getting to the ferry was another story though....we decided to cut costs by taking the subway, and we did not think that monday morning might be extremely busy, a slight oversight on our part. The line to get to the booth to buy tickets was nuts, and the number of people packed onto the subway was insane. What should have been a half an hour trip ended up being 1.5 hours. But we made it. And the relaxing ferry ride was even more enjoyable after the frenzied trip there.
We are off again on thursday the 23rd to Montevideo where we will encounter the city atmosphere once more.
