The search for the swamp tour didn't start off well. It seems after all our bitching about water in Louisiana, when we actually wanted to find some it was scarce. After driving around and around and much google searching, Laura finally found a number off louisianaswamptour.com which put us through to Brian. Giving us some crude directions we set off in search of Lake Martin, where he was operating tours. Finding the lake finally, Penelope was of no help at all, lazy cow, we met Brian as he was finishing off his last tour of the day.
Desperate to go on a tour as we were heading our way out of the state, Laura flashed the cash and we managed to squeeze a tour in. Brian led us round the bayou of Lake Martin, pointing out the flora and fauna along the way, including the prolific Nutria, along with Egrets, Owls, and a variety of Cyprus trees and lilies. Of course we were on the hunt for an alligator and with some 300 lurking somewhere in the waters you think it wouldn't be hard. Brian explained however that with the cooler turn in the weather they spend most of their time underwater where they can effectively shut down their body and not need to surface for air for 24 - 36 hours. The tour was completely worth it alone for the wealth of information this "boy from the bayous" had to share with us. We did finally see one alligator quickly before it snuck off a log it had been basking on, but unfortunately no photographic evidence. The tour over and the day drawing to a close, we set off toward the Texas border.
