Making progress... Portland to Seattle to Dallas.
This is the first day of my 14 week journey to South America and Antarctica. The last four weeks have been full of details as I've pretty much put this trip together myself. Arranging details at home for my absence, and moving all my possessions into a storage unit....it's been a busy month.
But it is quiet right now. As I write this I am on the Seattle to Dallas leg of my trip. It turned out that there was an earlier flight to Dallas, so I took it. I'll have a longer layover in Dallas, but to me a longer layover is better than lots of little ones. Anyway, now I am beginning to fret about my checked bag. The counter agent was confident that the bag would just stay on the flight I was supposed to be on, and would be in Buenos Aires on the same flight as me. OK, we'll find out, but it would be kind of a downer if they took the bag off the flight because I was not on it.... Seems like a post-9/11 kind of thing they might do.
I'll be using a GPS to track my miles. I love gadgets, and this one looks pretty cool. Took me a while to figure out how to get coordinates, but I think I have it. I'll be playing with it some more, they won't let me do that on the plane, saying some silly thing like it might bring the plane down.... If I get it right, I should be able to track my progress in distance, and geographically, the whole trip. I don't want to go crazy about this, but I think it would be fun to see how far I've gone via plane, boat, llama or whatever else I'm traveling on. For the gadget lover.... this little GPS is so cool! It weights 5 oz, has a complete map of North and South America in memory, and can store 500 waypoints at a time (and those can be transferred to my laptop). I have no idea if I can do it, but I'd like to plot these coordinates on a map someday.
That's all for now.
Distance I've traveled thus far: 1763 miles (PDX-SEA-DFW)
