When we last left Kirsten and Andy, they were happily on their way via the Eurostar to their honeymoon in Paris, with lodging in an atmospheric old hotel in the Marais neighborhood. So I was startled, to say the least, when I called Kirsten on her mobile phone to learn that she was not on the Eurostar heading back to England, but onboard a jet that was about to take off for New York!
In brief: Unnoticed during the wedding preparations and university work was the fact that her student visa to the UK was about to expire. When she and Andy were about to board the return Eurostar in Paris, she was informed that she couldn't return because of the expired visa, and she would need to go back to the U.S. to apply for renewal. Stunned, she scrambled and found the least expensive flight to America, which happened to be an Air France flight to New York.
(The bottom line, written April 20: She's finally back home in York. After three weeks in New York, crashing at the dorms and apartments of friends from college, from New York City to Poughkeepsie to Annandale to Boston and back, being apart from Andy four times longer than she was with him in marriage, she finally was able to pick up her new student visa and return to England. That it took three weeks to arrive at this solution when it took two hours to obtain her original student visa is astounding.)
