For someone of my generation, being in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) can't help but elicit memories and strong emotions over the war that cast a pall over our youth. I came here intending to focus on modern Vietnam...the people, the beauty of the countryside, the food, the culture. But the past intruded from the first -- I arrived at Tan Son Nhat Airport, which those of my generation recall as Tan Son Nhat air base, an arrival point for U.S. military. To sharpen the memories, lining one side of the airstrip are jet fighter bunkers...those round-roofed hangers for military aircraft that are intended to protect against enemy fire. They are now used for airport storage and other peaceful purposes.
I need to redouble my efforts to banish the ghosts of the past and give Vietnam a chance to be what it is today.

Just envy again.
I thought you might like Cambodia but I must say, I think I did warn you about the overland travel. If you are doing the same to Ho Chi Men City expect more of the same until after crossing the border.
Re: Just envy again.
Sorry about your comment moving. I had to shift some postings around because I uploaded photos to the wrong entry.
Yes, I loved Cambodia and endured the overland travel. Things are much improved from when you were there, I'm sure. In fact, I wouldn't be shocked if Siem Reap is bigger than Phnom Penh in 10 years...it's where the money and (tourist-related) jobs are.
Ho Chi Minh!
Hey Ron, your trusty neighbor here. I love reading your posts and seeing the pictures. Wish J, the girls, and I could be there. Heard about your cool invitation to the wedding. That's awesome. :-) Heather
Re: Ho Chi Minh!
Perhaps you will come here some day. You never know. Life just continues to be interesting if you let it be.
