Sunday 25 March 2012 – Caribbean Sea – Mexico

Our first overnight sail went well. Paul and I did 3 hour watches and the boat sped along - up to 11.5 knots! The gulf stream has a hefty current of 3 knots which gives the extra speed. We had lots of cups of tea and zucchini slice to keep us sated.  We went so fast we went past two planned stops and arrived at Isla Mujeres ( Isle of Women) by 10.30 the following morning.

Monday 26 March – 5 April 2012 -  Isla Mujeres (Isle of Women)

This is a small tourist isle a small distance east of Cancun. Cancun was one a small fishing village until 1970 when the Mexican government made a conscious decision to create a tourist destination. They built an airport and many, many hotels went up. Isla Mujeres is full of marinas, cheap eats, diving and party boats. These boats are full of young tourists dancing to loud music as they head out the cut on a daily basis.

We anchored out then went into town to check-in. This meant going to health, immigration and customs departments and then onto the Puerto de Capitain. We checked out the busy streets, ate some delicious tacos with Coronas then all asleep by 6pm!

Tuesday 27 March 2012 –

Finn and I had just started school when Paul yelled out for us to come upstairs. Coming towards us in a dinghy were our friends that we had not seen since Rio Dulce! The Timmermans Family on "Skyus" had come in during the night after a non-stop sail from Guatemala. They had coupled their sail with another catamaran “Ulysses”, an Austrian family with six children on board. It was great to see them all again and Finn was reunited with her girlfriends. All three boats motored into a marina “Paraiso de Yates” with a pool, hot showers and internet connection. Yahoo!!!

Wednesday 28 March 2012

Paul booked a golf cart for 24 hours – everyone drives them here – and we headed off to explore the island. Finn had traced a map of the island and planned to mark off all our stops. We saw the tortoise (Tortuga) pools, an old house (casa) and gardens (jardins) of a famous local pirate and slave trader and drove around the back streets to check out the local suburbia. We stopped for lunch and had a yummy fish stuffed with seafood. All great and very very hot!

Saturday 31 March 2012

As today is April Fool's Day in Australia – so  the  Aussie kids have decide to begin pranks today.  So  all of us have been hit with water at various times. – quite cooling actually..
