We arrived in Greece and were greeted with nice smooth new roads; it was so nice not to be bouncing around for a change! We booked into a camp ground in Alexandroupoli, which although pricey, was great, big camp spots right on the beach good toilet facilities and great hot showers! We did nothing except read and take a quick walk into town. While we were here we met a very eccentric Dutch man who since retiring from civil engineering had sold everything and bought a camper van, become a certified story teller and a healer (what ever this is????). Either way he kept us entertained for a good few hours and swapped some books with us, so quiet a successful meeting I would say!
We lay on the beach the next day before heading on our way. Greece really was just a passing through point for us, especially since we were a little behind schedule. I was really hoping to get up to Macedonia to see Hristina, but again, it was just too far out of the way and with having to get insurance etc we just couldn't do it. So we carried on along the coast for a bit then stayed in another (this time very basic) camp site and carried on towards Albania.
We stopped on the way at a place called Meteora, somewhere I hadn't heard about until some helpful fellow campers said we should go. Up in the hills on top of 24 amazing peaks of stone used to sit 24 monasteries (only 6 are left now) they must have been an amazing feat to build because some were on the very top of little peaks high off the ground and the only way to reach them was shear rock face! We visited two, both of which had been well restored to their former glory, and the whole place was very amazing and awe inspiring. We stayed the night at another over priced camp site and headed off the next day for Albania.
